A Chinese study published in JAMA shows that a considerable portion of the participants are reporting symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia and distress related to the work during the coronavirus disease 2019.
The study is a cross-sectional survey-based study in January 2020 among 1257 health care workers in 34 hospitals working with Covid-19 patients in different parts of China.
Half of the participants reported symptoms of depression (50,4 %), 44,6 % reported anxiety, 34 % had insomnia and 71,5 % said they experienced distress.
Nurses, women, health care workers in the frontline and health care workers in Wuhan had more symptoms than the other participants.
The conclusion is that these groups are in high risk of developing mental health issues, and may need psychological support or interventions.
